6th Most Popular Breed in the U.S.
In 2023 and 2024, dachshunds were ranked as the 6th most popular breed in the United States according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). They moved up from 9th place in 2022, showing an increase in popularity. Breeders and puppy mills supply puppies to pet stores. When their family/owner are unable to keep them, the dogs may end up at the shelter, or with a rescue like ours; Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue.
Why Are Dachshunds Surrendered?
People may come across unintended difficulties in life. When someone adopts a dachshund, they don’t intend to give them up. Please remember to make plans for your dog’s care in case of emergency or death.
- Divorce, death, moving
- Unable to provide family time for dog
- Behavior or physical needs of the dog
- Vet care: vaccinations, procedures like dentals, checking for cancer-tumors, IVDD rehab, spay, neuter, etc.
- Incompatible family situations; toddlers are known for not respecting a dachshunds space
- Lack of education about the breed going into adoption
- Severe or long-term Illness or entering assisted living
- Hoarding situations
